On September 12 – 14, one of the current Presidents of the Fund, Alderman Sheriff Bronek Masojada, will be leading a 3-day 195-mile charity cycle ride from the Old Bailey to the National Justice Museum in Nottingham in aid of the Fund.

The Fund was the nominated charity for the Duke of Edinburgh Cup held on 28 June 2024. Thank you to the Worshipful Company of Pewterers for proposing the Fund and to Ms. Emily Thomas, the Governor of HMP Isis, who was the guest speaker at the event. Proceeds from the event will be used to fund a rehabilitation project for young offenders at HMP Isis.

In our most recent financial year we saw a huge increase in the number of grant applications to the Fund and I am pleased to report that we funded 100% of eligible applications, making 1,219 grants with an all-time high total expenditure of £235,000.

The scarves, designed by the artist Matthew Lucraft, depict images of the Old Bailey, an iconic City of London landmark and the most famous courthouse in the world. All profits from the sale of these scarves will go to the S&R Fund.

An audience of nearly 200 guests was treated again by the Old Bailey Choir to a candlelit festival of lessons and carols in the Grand Hall at the Old Bailey for the benefit of the S&R Fund. All the proceeds from a generous leaving collection and the sale of our gifts will enable the Fund to make more grants at a time of year when the needs of prison leavers and their families are often greatest.

The Recorder of London, HHJ Mark Lucraft KC, hosted a reception at the Old Bailey for the presentation of a cheque to the S&R Fund. The funds had been raised at the Duke of Edinburgh Golf Day held at The London Golf Club in July 2023. The Worshipful Company of Pewterers proposed the S&R Fund as the recipient charity for the golf day and we were delighted that the Master Pewterer, HHJ Wendy Joseph KC, was able to join us for the presentation. Also in attendance were Alderman Sheriff Bronek Masojada, HHJ Simon Mayo KC (Liveryman of the Pewterers), William Makower (Trustee of the S&R Fund), Wei Qiang Zhang (UK Managing Director of sponsors ATFX), Lady Russell (Chair of Trustees of the S&R Fund), Mike Walliker (Trustee DofE Cup and Clerk to the Pewterers), HHJ Sarah Munro KC (golf day participant) and John Casserly (Operations Director of the DofE Cup).

We had a very successful and informative visit to HMP Brixton to see and experience the excellent work that National Prison Radio, which is based here, is doing. The Fund gave a grant in 2023 to enable the Prison Radio Association to work with men to create new radio content. Prisoners visit the studios daily over a three month period and are taught by experienced presenters how to interview, to formulate and edit programmes and actively contribute to the radio’s impressive programme. National Prison Radio is available in prisons across England and Wales and is broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week into the prison cells. 70% of prisoners listen to NPR and 50% feel more confident about successfully returning to life in the Community after hearing something informative and practical on the radio. Programmes range from chat and music shows to motivational and invaluable advice, reading and current news and culture. It was apparent from the prisoners we met that they had much improved communication skills, self-esteem and confidence having been given the opportunity to take part in this scheme.

A group of Trustees and Advisory Council members spent an interesting morning at HMP Downview in the workshop of Making for Change (MFC), London College of Fashion’s social project. The MFC programme supports women prisoners to develop new skills, to build pride through the creative process, improve time management and build confidence through teamwork – equipping them with the professional skills and qualifications to build new lives
upon their return to society.
The S&R Fund is supporting the project by providing funding for the Fashion
Lecturer, a critical part of the workshop. To date, MFC has supported more
than 150 women in prison.
